FRED® Services Terms of Use FAQ

1) What can I do with FRED data?

You can do a lot of things with FRED data, graphs, maps, software, and mobile apps for your own personal, non-commercial use such as...

  • Make cool graphs and maps and share them with friends
  • Download data into Excel for homework assignments
  • Support your policy stance on Facebook or your blog
  • Make a sweet app using our FRED through our free API

Just be sure to mention FRED as the service from which you retrieved the data and keep any copyright notices that appear with the data on FRED.

If you’re over age 13, you can create a free, personal account to save data series and any graphs and maps you’ve created. For complete information on personal accounts, see the full FRED® Services Terms of Use and our Privacy Notice & Policy.

2) What can’t I do with FRED data?

You can’t take all the data on FRED and claim it’s a unique product or service. Don’t try to pass off FRED or its related services (Excel Add-In, Widget, or mobile apps) as your own product or try to sell them to anyone. Don’t do any data mining, scraping or extraction of FRED data. Don’t remove or change the FRED logo on the chart.

For complete information see the full FRED® Services Terms of Use

3) Why do some series on FRED have a copyright notice?

Series with a copyright notice are owned by third parties and have special restrictions. Before using data with a copyright notice for anything other than your own personal use, you must contact the data owner to obtain permission. Unfortunately, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis cannot give you such permission.

4) I have questions or comments about using FRED, who should I contact?

We welcome your feedback and suggestions for improving FRED. For comments or questions about the data in the FRED® database, we prefer you send an email to stlsFRED@stls.frb.org.

5) How should I cite or provide attribution to FRED?

Use the suggested citation on the "Cite" tab underneath each FRED graph and map. FRED is also compatible with the Zotero citation tool.

For anything other than your own personal use, refer to the full FRED® Services Terms of Use

Summarized FRED® Services Terms of Use

FRED is a database of more than 800,000 economic data series from over 100 sources covering issues and information relating to banking, business, consumer and producer price indices, employment, population, exchange rates, gross domestic product, interest rates, trade and international transactions, and U.S. financial data. In general, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis encourages the use of FRED data, and associated materials, to support policymakers, researchers, journalists, teachers, students, businesses, and the general public.

FRED provides data and data services to the public for non-commercial, educational, and personal uses subject to a few prohibitions. Furthermore, other uses (e.g., commercial) are subject to additional restrictions. You are free to access and use FRED at no cost, subject to the full terms and conditions of the service.
